Homemade body scrub

I have been making my own body scrub since I was about 16. It is so easy and satisfying to make your own that you will never ever go back to shop bought scrubs!

Once upon a time I would be tempted by eye catching packaging and weird and wonderful smells of commercial scrubs. I have recently found out that a lot of the body scrubs that you buy in shops contain something called micro beads. Micro beads are basically tiny particles of plastic less then 5 mm big. They are used instead of natural exfoliators. Because the particles used in the face and body scrubs in particular are so small (usually around 1 mm or less) they are not captured by water plants which means that they end up in our rivers and oceans. There is evidence that they can be ingested by the planktonic organisms at the bottom of the food chain which end up ingested by larger fish which in turn feed us.

Making your own scrub only takes 2 minutes and the advantage is that you can put whatever you want into it. All you need for a body scrub is 3 ingredients:

1.Something abrasive (sugar, salt, oats, coffee grounds…)
2.Oil carrier (Olive Oil, Almond oil, sunflower oil)
3.Essential oil – to give it fragrance, lemon, lavender, rosemary….

There are endless possibilities and you can experiment with different essential oils to see which ones you prefer. I love lemon in the mornings, lavender at night and rosemary when I have a cold.

But this one is my all time favourite!

You need:

•2-3 TBS Olive oil/ Sunflower Oil
•200 Fine Sea salt (you can use rock salt but I don’t find it as good as it doesn’t really exfoliate, it is a bit too harsh for my liking)
•20 drops of Sweet Orange Essential Oil

It makes about half of small Kilner Jar.

How to:

1.   Put the salt into the jar and slowly add oil. Depending on how oily you like the scrub you can add more oil that I have used.

2.   Add the essential oil. If you are using stronger essential oils like sandalwood or patchouli, you are best just adding a few drops at the time so that you can gauge the strength.

3.   Mix all ingredients well and use on wet skin. Rinse after use. 

 If you are using salt as your exfoliator, it will keep for a few weeks so you can make a bigger batch and keep it in the bathroom.  I usually make fresh one every time as I can use different essential oils depending on my mood.

The only thing that you have to be careful off is that the bath is treacherously slippery after using the scrub so be careful and give your bath a bit of a wipe after each use.

This would be a pretty awesome and quick Christmas present for someone too;) 



Kilner Jar Compost

One of the biggest parts of our rubbish is wet waste- fruit and vegetable peels, bones from meat, tea bags, egg shells etc. I was looking for a way that I could compost all of this and so reduce the amount of trash that we produce on a weekly basis. 

Even though a lot of the wet waste is biodegradable, when it is mixed with other trash in landfill it does not actually bio degrade that quickly as items in landfill are so tightly packed that there is no oxygen or hardly any living organisms that would make the process possible. 

Some councils offer compost collection and provide little green counter top bins that sit on your kitchen surface but unfortunately Sheffield City Council is not one of them. Instead you can get discounts for home composting kits. As we live in a rented flat it is difficult for us to have a compost bin in the back garden.  I also wanted to make my life as easy as possible so I looked for places where I could just empty my compost bin. I have found out that there is an initiative through my work that offers compost collection. All of the waste is used to produce fertiliser and electricity through anaerobic digestion. Because the waste is converted to energy, I can put most of my wet waste in it- egg shells, food scraps and even meat bones which don’t usually end up in house composts. The next challenge was finding a compost bin which could sit in the kitchen without smelling of 5 days old chicken bones. I didn’t like the green plastic compost boxes as you need to buy carbon filters which cost £ (and produce more waste in the process) and instead I decided to use my trusty Kilner Jar. If it is good enough to keep my jams from bacteria, then it is good enough to contain the compost smells! 

I got the biggest jar available which is 3 litres. I have been using it for a while now and I am really happy with it as it doesn’t smell at all. There were a few fails where I didn’t have time to empty the compost bin and after a few weeks it got really interesting… These days we fill one up every week or so. The collections bins are conveniently located en route to a really nice pub so we usually combine the two;)

If you have your own house, you can easily get a little compost in your back garden. It is worth asking around if you want to start composting but have no means of having one. You can always ask your neighbours as well if you can empty your compost into theirs! If there are any allotments in your area, chances are that they have their own compost heap and wouldn’t mind a few extra scraps. It’s all converted to nutrients so why not? 

It's not just about the plastic bag...

As the new law on charging 5p for a plastic bags comes into force today, there is definitely reason for celebration.

There is no question that plastic bags are outright bad for the environment. Lightweight plastic bags are often only used once, but  can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Plastic bags are recyclable but the general curb side collection does not usually accept them and will prevent people from recycling them. In order to recycle plastic bags you need to find out where the recycling point is, then collect the bags, and potentially drive all the way to drop them off. Instead, more than 8 billion plastic bags in Europe end up used for random bits of ‘wet rubbish’ discarded with general waste which often means that they end up in landfill.

As off today, supermarkets will make it more difficult for their customers to walk out with a shopping cart full of disposable bags by charging them five pence per bag. The government has high hopes for the outcomes as they predict they will be able to save millions of pounds on litter clean ups as well as generate money for ‘good causes’.

There is no doubt that this move has been long over due.
Countries like Rwanda and Somalia have banned plastic bags completely. Ireland led the European revolution on plastic bags by introducing a charge of 12p per bag in 2002, which resulted in 95% reduction in the use of plastic bags within a year. Their levy is used to finance the Environment Fund which supports research in waste management and other environmental projects. The rest of Britain have been on board for a few years already with Wales seeing reduction in plastic bags usage by 79% in the first three years.

So overall this is no doubt a positive move. But the question is: Should we stop there? At the moment the charge only applies to bags with handles, and all the food packaging is exempt. We know just how bad plastic is for the environment, whether it has handles or not so why is there no law to eradicate those as well?
I used to use plastic bags instead of a bin liner. As a skint student, it made more sense to me to collect a free plastic bag with my shopping and use it instead of bin liners which cost my ever depleting student loan. Both bags are made of thin plastic so there really isn’t any difference in them.   

I have started to develop more of an awareness of the impact that single use plastic (SUP) has on the environment. I got myself cotton bags for life and I thought that I was going to reduce the use of plastic bags in my life.  I would take the 'life bag' to the shop with me, fill it with shopping and skip home. I didn’t have any more bin liners so I had to buy some new ones (and essentially doing exactly what I was trying to eradicate i.e. buying more plastic in a different form) because I had to put my rubbish somewhere!

That is when I started to realize that the reduction of plastic bags is just the beginning. The real problem was what goes into it (or the bin liner for that matter) and that is- rubbish. I have noticed that all of my shopping was wrapped in packaging. The whole chicken I bought for a Sunday roast came wrapped in thin plastic film on a plastic tray, a bag of pasta was packaged in an essentially plastic bag and the sliced bread was packaged in guess what...plastic!

All of those and more such as food waste, packaging, hygiene products, tubs from creams and make up, random bits of bric –a brac all ended up in my plastic bag/bin liner waste bin. I recycled what I could but there was so much of my weekly shop that just wasn’t recyclable.  I went through all of my cupboards to try and see just how much of the packaging can be recycled and I was horrified at the result.

As I do a lot of adventure cycling and walking, this issue became even more obvious. Often, you have to take food and water for a few days. Most of the food comes in some sort of packaging which results in a pile of rubbish that you have to drag along with you as there isn’t anywhere to dispose of it. When you have your dinner in the middle of the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland, the rubbish that you produce just looks outright ugly and you feel as if it has no place in an environment like that.  

I love the great outdoors and I travel to see these breath taking places, yet I eat food and drink water inside packaging which threatens the same eco-system and environment that I came to see. This realisation was a real spur for me to do something about the amount of waste that I am producing.

Our lives are so dependant on supermarket shopping and packaged goods that it it incredibly difficult to detangle yourself from this plastic mess if you want to make a positive change. Food, hygiene products and cosmetics, clothes, electronics and pretty much everything that we use all come in packaging due to health and safety laws and often consumer habit. These and other items are all the things we rely on to live and survive to a point.

There are however pioneers that have managed to reduce their waste regardless of how difficult it is. A family of four in California have adopted the ‘Zero Waste’ lifestyle to a point where their yearly rubbish fits into a jam jar, all whilst living a 'modern lifestyle'.  

So giving up the plastic bag is just a beginning. Join me on this journey as I try to reduce the amount of trash that I produce all whilst trying to live my life as I normally would.

Wild Food: Raspberry

I am sure the mighty Raspberry (Rubus Idaeus) does not need much identification. I thought I share it with you anyway, as in my whole foraging times I have never found wild Raspberries. Until.Now. I might have even had a little victory dance.:) Because of the long winter, the Raspberries have been quite late this year. They are easily identified, pink berries found on a bush which can grow quite high to about 1.5 meters. They usually grow in Late June, July to August depending on location and how much sun they get over the summer months. It is difficult to identify them until they are actually ripe and fully developed Raspberries as the bushes and young berries look like Blackberries. 

When young, the flowers look like Blackberry flowers but the leaves are a little bit paler than those of the Blackberry. It took me a few years to distinguish one from the other. The stem of a raspberry is a bit smoother.

The wild variety of the Raspberry is not as perfectly shaped and big as the shop bought cultivated variety but that does not take anything of the tangy taste. Raspberries are so tasty in literally anything that you will struggle to decide what to do with them, that is of course if you have any left and did not eat them all whilst picking. I have made a Raspberry and Bilberry smoothie which was absolutely delicious!
